In 2010, Carmarthen Town Centre welcomed a new £74m flagship Debenhams store, filling the 6,000 sq m space in Carmarthen Town centre. 11 years later, the shopping unit shut for good.

However, after securing a total of £18.5m in funds, the old Debenhams store will now be transformed into the Carmarthen Hwb, a decision which has been praised by Carmarthen politician Samuel Kurtz MS

Speaking about the announcement, Senedd Member for Carmarthen West & South Pembrokeshire, Samuel Kurtz MS said:

“Following one of the most turbulent times in our high street’s history, this announcement from Carmarthenshire County Council has the ability to transform our town centre.

“Our high-streets are no longer just a place to bargain hunt, they’ve become somewhere to meet, work, play and socialise – that’s why the Carmarthen Hwb is such an important introduction to the town centre.

“Let this be the turning point for our high street and the start of an ambitious and forward-looking plan to reel people back to our town.”
