Samuel Kurtz, Member of the Senedd, has announced that his popular “Best Local Pub” competition is now well underway for its second year, and has already received an incredible 520 nominations from across West Wales.

The competition gives residents the chance to celebrate the pubs that make their communities special. At the heart of towns and villages, local pubs are far more than places to enjoy a pint, they are hubs of social connection, culture and community spirit.

“Last year’s competition was a huge success,” said Samuel Kurtz MS. “We were delighted to see The Ivy Bush in Narberth crowned winner, with The Highgate Inn in Hundleton named runner-up. This year has already exceeded expectations, with 520 nominations received so far and we’re now accepting entries from across the whole of West Wales.”

Across Mid and South Pembrokeshire, there are 162 local pubs and five breweries contributing £57 million to the local economy and supporting 1,175 jobs highlighting just how vital the sector is to the region. Similarly, across Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, 161 pubs and five breweries support 1,800 jobs and contribute £59 million to the local economy.

Residents can nominate their favourite pub via www.samuelkurtz.wales or through Samuel Kurtz’s social media channels. Nominations close on 20th March,  just under three weeks away so there is still time for communities to back their local.

Winners will receive a prize including a free barrel of a standard beer of their choice, generously sponsored by Templeton Beer, Wine and Spirit Co.

The competition aims to showcase the diverse range of pubs that make each community unique and to recognise the essential role they continue to play.

“Let’s work together to shine a spotlight on the pubs that have made a difference in our lives and continue to play a pivotal role in our towns and villages,” added Samuel Kurtz.
