Local Senedd Member Samuel Kurtz has expressed his disappointment following the decision by Pembrokeshire County Council to close Manorbier Church in Wales VC School.
The decision was confirmed during a council meeting on Thursday March 5th, where the future of the school has been under question following a fire in late 2022 which left the school unusable.
Responding to the decision, Samuel Kurtz MS said:
“I am deeply disappointed by the decision to close Manorbier School. My thoughts are with the pupils, parents, staff and the wider community who will be directly affected by this outcome. Headteacher Sharon Davies and her team have been remarkably strong during this whole process.”
He added that the school has played an important role in the life of the village for many years.
“For generations, Manorbier School has been at the heart of the community. Schools like this are about far more than education, they are places where communities come together and where young people begin their journeys in life.”
Samuel Kurtz also highlighted the uncertainty the decision will bring for families and staff.
“This decision will understandably cause real concern for families, staff and children as they make the transition to attend St Florence School. It is vital that those affected are given clear information, proper support and reassurance during what will be a very difficult time.”
He said he had spoken with a number of parents and residents throughout the process and recognised the strength of feeling locally.
“Many people in the community worked incredibly hard to campaign for the school and to make their voices heard. I want to thank everyone who engaged in the process and stood up for their local school, including Headteacher Sharon Davies and County Councillor Phil Kidney.”
Samuel Kurtz MS said he would continue to engage with the council and education authorities to ensure families are supported as the transition takes place.
“My focus now is on making sure the needs of pupils, parents and staff are fully considered as the next steps are taken.”
