Pupils from Years 5 and 6 at St Oswald’s VA Primary School in Jeffreyston enjoyed a special visit from Samuel Kurtz MS, Member of the Senedd for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, on Monday 2 February.

During the visit, Samuel Kurtz spoke to pupils about the role of the Senedd, how democracy works in Wales, and the importance of representing local communities. He explained how decisions are made in the Welsh Parliament, what a Member of the Senedd does on behalf of constituents, and why participation in democratic life matters.

The session also gave pupils the opportunity to ask questions and share their own ideas about their local area. Pupils showed a strong interest in how Wales is governed and how young people can make their voices heard.

Speaking after the visit, Samuel Kurtz MS said:

“It was a real pleasure to visit St Oswald’s VA Primary School and to see such enthusiasm and curiosity from the pupils. Understanding how democracy works and how decisions are made is important, and it is really encouraging to see young people taking an interest in how their community and country are run.

“I was particularly impressed by the quality of the questions I was asked, which showed the pupils had taken the time to research and understand the different levels of political representation.”

Teachers at the school welcomed the visit as a valuable opportunity for pupils to learn about Welsh democracy and civic engagement in a practical and engaging way.

The visit forms part of Samuel Kurtz’s ongoing work across the constituency to engage with local schools, community groups and residents, helping to explain how the Senedd works and how people can play an active role in democratic life.
